We are deeply saddened to announce that Susan Douglas passed away on December 22, 2022, at the age of 77.
Sue was born in Brooklyn, New York on February 4, 1945. Her father was William John Paivine, and her mother was Catherine Paivine. Following his career in the Navy, Sue's father moved from Prunedale to King City, and finally to San Luis Obispo with his wife and two daughters, Sue, and Mary Margaret (Meg). While living in San Luis Obispo, the couple had 3 more children: Lenore (Lee), William John Jr. (Bill), and Claire (Bunny). Sue, being the oldest of 5, always helped out around the house and ensured her younger siblings were attended to. Over the years, Sue cherished her time spent in San Luis Obispo with family, always retelling stories of her upbringing.
Sue was a very intelligent individual and graduated from San Luis Obispo High School with honors. She received a full scholarship to attend Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington to study Biochemistry. She was able to fulfill her lifelong dream of becoming a Lab Technician. One of Sue’s greatest recreational passions was to ski. During college, she visited Sun Valley on vacation, where she met her future husband, Michael Douglas. Following college, Sue moved to Hailey, married Michael, and began working in a hospital. Mike and Sue had two children together, Michael and Brenda. Many years later, Brenda had two children, Vanessa, and Gabe, making Sue a grandmother (Grammy). Throughout the rest of her life, her grandchildren were one of her greatest joys.
Sue moved back to California when she and Mike separated. Although distant from close family, she always made time for family vacations, such as trips across the western United States and the beaches of Mexico. When Sue retired, she made the decision to move "home" to her family. Over the years, she enjoyed playing bridge, seeing local musicals, and spending time with her beloved dog, Dusty.
Sue’s daughter, Brenda, unexpectedly passed away in 2020, and Sue’s health began declining. A stepdaughter and friend, Sonya, stepped in to provide a helping hand in her remaining years.
Sue will be missed, but heaven gained a beautiful, funny, and courageous angel.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents, Bill, and Kay; her sister, Meg; and her daughter, Brenda. Sue is survived by her son, Michael; her grandchildren, Vanessa, and Gabe; her siblings, Lee, Bill, and Bunny; and many nieces and nephews.
There will be a memorial mass held on Monday, January 2, 2023, at 10:00 am at St. Charles Catholic Church, 313 S. 1st Ave., Hailey ID 83333
In the spring/summer of 2023, the family will hold a celebration of life.
