Life Story for
Walter Leon Peck
Walter Leon Peck, 70, of Carey, Idaho, passed away on November 13, 2014 at his home in Carey, Idaho.
Walter was born on September 27, 1944 in Hailey, Idaho to Justin Leon Peck and Barbara Anne Bulgrin. He grew up in Carey, Idaho and later attended Ricks College and Idaho State University where he earned a Bachelors in Education.
Walter taught PE and Science and coached basketball and track at Richfield and Snake River Middle Schools. He also worked for the Jackson Hole Guide newspaper and later on for his father Leon, on the family ranch and sheep business in Carey.
Walter raised quarter horses under the +4 brand over the span of his life. This was his first love and his lifelong passion. He set out to breed horses that cowboys would love to ride. It turns out that cowboys did love to ride his horses, along with western pleasure people, trail riders, team ropers and the occasional dressage queen. He was proud of good legs, a pretty head and a willing spirit that may not be the most gentle thing in the barn, but would give you an honest days’ work every day of the week.
Throughout his life, Walter donated many hours to the Carey 4H, FFA and City Counsel. He rode with the Carey Riding Club and spent many evenings team roping at the local arena. He enjoyed supporting the local Fair and especially the fat stock sale and always encouraged his children to participate.
Walter owned the Loading Chute Bar and Grill in Carey and Mackay. He loved entertaining everyone from the everyday local to the variety of travelers that came through. Walter was quick with his wit and somewhat of a local celebrity for his comfort food (as anyone about his chili). He provided generations of Carey kids with employment as well as life skills in his restaurant. He was particularly fond of holding dances in the bar. He was routinely the last one on the floor and the first one cooking breakfast before everyone went home.
Walter married Naoni Craven in 1967 and together they had a daughter, Adrienne. They divorced in 1975 and in 1977 he married Sam Beam and together they had a son, Marlon. They divorced in 2001.
Walter was preceded in death by his mother Barbara and his father Leon. He is survived by his sisters Anne Taylor, Jane Butterfield, Hollie Rambo and Melody Vauthier; daughter Adrienne Baisch (Greg) and granddaughter Macie; his son Marlon Peck (Crystal) and grandson Justin as well as one in the oven; his step-daughter Brandice Swanson; and both of his ex’s....who don’t live in Texas.
