Life Story for Virginia Nelson Miller

Virginia Miller, 86, of Hailey passed away on August 21, 2017 from lung cancer. Virginia was born in Oakley, Idaho on January 22, 1931. Virginia’s parents were Hunter and Zeo Nelson.

When she was in the 4th grade, her father transferred with the Forest Service from Oakley, ID to Hailey, ID. The family spent their winters in Hailey but for many years the summers were spent at Russian John Ranger Station north of Ketchum, ID. and also at Big Smoky Ranger Station near Fairfield, ID.

Virginia and her 3 siblings had many adventures in the forests of Idaho and she loved telling stories of their wild escapades. She always swore anyone she told those stories to to secrecy saying please do not tell her parents of the harrowing adventures the 4 little children had crossing rapid flowing rivers while holding hands and hiking the mountains behind the ranger stations.

In May of 1948 she married John F. Miller in Hailey. They made their home in Hailey and remained married until John’s death in 2009. Virginia and John had 3 children: Marilyn Angela, Mary Alaine and Markus Alfred.

Together, John and Virginia made numerous trips to Las Vegas to car races, and many trips to Jackpot Nevada for a day of fun. They loved going to the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah to watch car racing and most particularly to watch their son, Mark, race his vehicles and set land speed records.

Virginia worked for Mountain Bell Telephone Co. for 25 years. She first worked as a telephone switchboard operator but when Hailey “went dial” in the early 60s, she transferred to the telephone company’s business office where she subsequently retired. After retiring from Mountain Bell, she worked for the Idaho State Liquor Store for a few years, and finished out her career as a Customer Service Representative for Intermountain Gas Co. for 5 years.

After her retirement she volunteered for several years at the Senior Connection as the lunch cashier. She continued to support the Senior Connection Center and loved all her dear friends there. She truly enjoyed the many day trips taken by the Seniors such as taking the gondola up Baldy to the Round House for lunch, the trip to see the remodeled Sun Valley Lodge, and trips on the bus to Twin Falls.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John, her parents, Hunter and Zeo Nelson, her brother Raymond Nelson and her son in law Dave Morley.

She is survived by her brother Harold Nelson (Betty) of Twin Falls, ID., her sister, Janice Turner (Newell) of Bountiful, UT, her 3 children, Marilyn Parker (Tom) of Star, ID, Mary Morley of Boise, ID. And Mark Miller (Rustin) of Hailey, ID. And 5 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Hospice of the Wood River Valley, PO Box 4320, Ketchum, ID 83340 or the Senior Connection, PO Box 28, Hailey, ID 83333.

Services are pending for Friday afternoon. Please check back for further arrangements.
