Robert Logan

As the sun prepared to lift itself over the horizon on the morning of November 2, 2017, Bob Logan began his final voyage in his home, surrounded by his wife and children; just as he lived his life, with eyes wide open for the adventure before him. He was a strong and brave man who fought the ravages of Fibrosis in his lungs for many years, unable to defeat his foe but battling to the end.

Born Robert Chapman Logan to Helen Grace and Rupert Logan in Boise, Idaho, on December 9th, 1929, Bob was one of 7 children. He grew up active and energetic in the Boise area, meeting his future wife, Betty, in the summer of 1952 when he was 23 years old. Married on the 28th of March, 1953, they began a nearly 65 year adventure together. Those who knew them knew that it was difficult to see where one person ended and the other began. So much of his life story can only be told as “they” for their bond and love was strong and their life together was just that, together. Avid lovers of the outdoors, Bob and Betty took many trips with family and friends on motorcycles and horseback throughout the wilderness of Idaho and surroundings states. Over the years they created a family which expanded beyond the boundaries of blood and marriage, including generations of people touched by their love and welcomed into their family if not born into it. Blessed with four children they rejoiced as their family grew to include 18 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandson.

Bob and Betty moved to the Wood River Valley in 1960 where they raised their family, and where Bob spent 40 years working for and retiring from the telephone company. They eventually sold their first valley home in Hailey and Bob, in his “retirement,” helped build their home south of Bellevue. He would live out his days in this home working with wood, tinkering in his shop, farming, and goofing with grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a home teacher of the LDS Church and Boy Scout leader in his early years; beginning a lifetime of commitment to those around him which culminated with Bob and Betty spending nearly 40 winters volunteering at Rotarun Ski Hill. Four generations of their family would learn to ski on the mountain, and their efforts were commemorated in 2003 when Rotarun officially named Logan’s Run on the mountain in thanks for their decades of service. Bob rarely sat still, except to cuddle grandchildren and great grandchild on his lap. He found time to complete his lifelong dreams of fishing in Alaska and was honored to be invited (at 70 years old) to join his friend, Randy Edgars, on a three week float trip down the Grand Canyon. He spent a lifetime outdoors; camping, fishing, hunting, and generally enjoying this gift called life with anyone who wished to join him. The last 6 years saw the inclusion of special trips with his wife and children to Lake Powell where he would consistently out fish his family, making his final trip there in October 2017. A humble man, his humor never lacked, nor did his ability to remind those around him of his skills in fishing; teasing with a twinkle in his eye and a grin on his face.

Bob will be reunited in heaven with his parents (Helen Grace and Rupert) and three of his siblings (Keith, Monte, Jack). Though words can outline his life, no words can express the vastness of the space his passing creates for those who knew him. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of the Wood River Valley, who eased his days for nearly 2 years with their care and compassion.

Final respects can be paid at the Hailey LDS Chapel on Friday, November 10, 2017 beginning with visitation at 1:00 pm and a chapel service at 2:00 pm.
