Hyrum LeGrand Nielsen

May 31, 1996 — June 16, 2019

Hyrum LeGrand Nielsen, age 23, of Carey, Idaho was called home Sunday, June 16
following a motorcycle accident near his home. He was born in Henderson, Nevada to parents
Douglas and Mesia Nielsen. Known affectionately as “The Wild Man” by his family, Hyrum had
an adventurous spirit from the outset.

From eating dirt as a little boy to catching and cooking rattlesnakes, and trekking through
a Louisiana swamp, Hyrum always kept his family wondering what he would do next. Among
his favorite pastimes were fishing, hunting, camping and other outdoor pursuits. Recently he
accompanied his dad on a once-in-a-lifetime hunt for desert bighorn sheep.

One of Hyrum’s passions was helping other people, and he was always on the lookout for
an opportunity to help others. That led him to join the Carey Volunteer Fire Department as fire
fighter and Emergency Medical Technician. He was training to serve with the Bureau of Land
Management fire crews. Hyrum’s family is grateful to his brothers from the department who
responded after his accident.

Hyrum also was an accomplished musician and enjoyed singing. He played several
instruments, including the guitar and piano.

An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Hyrum had a
strong testimony of his Savior, Jesus Christ. He enjoyed serving as a primary teacher and loved
teaching the children. He loved each one of them.

He is preceded in death by his brothers Justin and Michael Nielsen, their mother Michelle
Nielsen, grandparents Carmen and Willard Stewart, Carole Nielsen, and Don Ashworth. He is
survived by his parents Douglas and Mesia Nielsen, his siblings Krystaly Koch (Maddie),
Sherese Francis (Michael), Calli Nielsen (Chad Forsyth), Dallin Nielsen (Stephanie), and the
people of Carey, Idaho.
