Life Story for Donetta R. DeVoe

Donetta Rachel Hansen DeVoe, 94, of Ketchum, died on Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at Bell Mountain Village in Hailey, where she had resided for the last 10 months.

She was born April 20, 1920 in Central, Idaho to Charles Glen and Rachel Higginson Hansen. Donetta was the oldest of eight children. Her mother died when she was eight years old and her father moved the family to Boise shortly thereafter.

Donetta graduated from Boise High School in 1938 and continued her education at Brigham Young University where she met George Alfred DeVoe, whom she married October 8, 1940 in Boise, Idaho. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Cardston Alberta Canada LDS Temple. They lived in Seattle, Washington while George served in the US Coast Guard during World War II. They then moved to Somers, Montana. Donetta was the bookkeeper for the DeVoe Lumber Company, which was owned by George and his brother. The mill burned to the ground in 1957, and the family then moved to Boise, Idaho. It was in Boise that Donetta began her long career in the fashion industry. She began with The Bon Marche (Macys) and continued as the buyer for the Carroll's stores. In May 1980, she and George moved to Ketchum, Idaho and purchased the Carroll's in Giacobbi Square. She loved her work, and organized many fashion shows through the years.

Donetta was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and conducted the music and choir in the Sun Valley ward for over thirty years. She loved music and was a talented singer. While running Carroll's, she sponsored The Chicago Eight during the Sun Valley Jazz Festival. Donetta loved crossword puzzles and inspired many of her friends to do them and then challenged them. She loved the beauty and staff at the Sun Valley Club and could be seen at “her” table every day for years. She also loved to travel to exotic places and enjoyed cruises with many of her friends.

She is survived by her sisters Sue Alder and Iris Smith, and brother Norman Hansen; daughter-in-law Suzanne DeVoe; grandchildren Alyson Anderson, Jeff DeVoe, Ryan DeVoe, Michael DeVoe, and Ben DeVoe; great grandchildren Nick Anderson, Kristen VanSant, Rachel Willet, Jake Anderson, Ty DeVoe, Olivvya DeVoe, Sydney DeVoe, Violette DeVoe, and Paige DeVoe; and great-great grandchild Wyatt Van Sant, as well as many dear friends and extended family. She is preceded in death by her husband, George DeVoe, and children Kristen Iris DeVoe, Dr. Roger Charles DeVoe and Craig Sullivan DeVoe, as well as her parents and brothers, Dean Hansen, Willis Hansen, Vear Hansen, and sister, Beth Hansen Holbrook.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m., Monday, October 27, 2014 at the Sun Valley LDS Church with Bishop Brian Evans conducting. Friends and family may call 12:00 pm until 1 :00 pm at the church. A graveside service will be held at 1 :00 pm, Tuesday, October 28, 2014 in the family plot at the Central Cemetery near Soda Springs, Idaho.

Memorial donations are suggested to the Sun Valley L.D.S. Church.
