Life Story for Gerald Reed "Jerry" Decker

Jerry Decker gave up his fight with cancer on June 17, 2012. He passed away at home. Jerry was born in Los Angeles, California and grew up in Glendale, California. When he was a little boy he was able to go on Boy Scout outings with his father, who was a Boy Scout Leader. He took great pride in his Scouting skills when he was a Boy Scout himself. They took many camping trips in the mountains around L.A. Jerry did well in school, and eventually went on to college at Berkley University. While he was there, the Vietnam War protests closed the school down, so he went home and joined the Navy. He attended Corp School after basic training. They would be Medics in Vietnam, but when his company was ready to be deployed, Jerry contracted pneumonia. He was left behind. Jerry moved to Oregon and started his family.

Jerry became a fireman in Albany, Oregon. Later when the firemen were asked to become paramedics as well as fireman; he accepted. He saved many lives and his job became his passion. Fishing and hunting were his favorite hobbies. He later moved to Idaho and became a Deputy Director of Emergency Medical Services. He helped train and organize five Idaho counties for EMS. After many years his health required him to change jobs and he changed his family situation as well. He married Diana in 1992. She said she knew he was the one for her because of his sense of humor. They were married for 20 years.

Jerry worked for the Department of Labor until May 2012. He worked very hard to become the best consultant he could be. He was also on the Blaine County Center’s board for the College of Southern Idaho.

Jerry worried about all of his children- his, mine, and ours.

His belief in Christ meant everything to him.

We’ll miss him.
