Obituary for
Roger Joseph Connor
On February 9, 2011 Roger Joseph Connor died peacefully at home with his family.
Roger was born in Chicago in 1923 and met his future wife, Martha, sixteen years later at Hyde Park High School. They were married on February 5, 1943 at Fort Collins, Colorado to the rousing approval of every soldier in Company A. He spent most of WW11 in the European Theater as a Combat MP. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology and went on to receive a Master's in Physics from UCLA while working for Douglas Aircraft Co. in Santa Monica, California.
In 1952 the couple, with their three children, moved to Crown Point, Indiana and owned a successful mechanical construction company in Hammond, R.J. Connor, Inc. He played chess, bridge, tennis and skied. He never stopped wanting to learn. At age 75 he received an Associates Degree in the Classics from the University of Chicago. When he retired from business he taught engineering at Purdue University and was a Quality Control Engineer at Great Lakes Naval Station.
In the 90's, Roger and Martha moved to the Wood River Valley to watch their five grandchildren grow up. Roger continued to play bridge and tennis and was mentored on the piano by the marvelous virtuoso and valued friend, Elena Boranova.
He is survived by his wife Martha Ann; three sons: Michael Patrick, Roger Francis and Daniel John; two daughter-in-laws: Jane Ann and Isolde Schmit; three grandsons: Bradly Schene, Michael James and Kitt Daniel; two granddaughters: Kathleen Elizabeth and Tess Ann. He was truely loved and will be sorely missed.
